STUDI KONVERSI SELULOSA DARI KAYU GELAM (Melaleuca leucadendron Linn) MENJADI ASAM LEVULINAT MENGGUNAKAN KATALIS H2SO4 DALAM SISTEM HOMOGEN
Extraction of cellulose from Gelam wood (Melaleuca leucadendron Linn) was conducted using a methanol solvent followed by acidification process using hydrochloric acid vvith various concentrations that is 1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, 9% and 1 l%(v/v). Product cellulose was compared wiih Standard cellulose through measurements using FT-IR spectroscopy, ash content, water content and study of cellulose conversion. The results showed that the highest of ash content of 3%(v/v) HC1 is 1.34%(w/w), while the lowest levels is 0.099%(w/w). The highest water content in cellulose from the use of acid 7%(v/v) is 4.56%(w/w) while the lowest levels is 1.08%(w/w). The results showed that at 5 hours reaction time conversion of cellulose to acid levulinic achieved at the optimum time with the levulinic acid 3.99%. Conversion of cellulose from Gelam at the optimum reaction time gave 0.88% levulinic acid.
