Coalbed methane developed from a safety hazard in coal mines to an unconventional gas reservoir in the last quarter of the 20th century. Many articles dealing with coal geoscience and reservoir engineering have been written over the last 30 or 40 years, and the field is now sufficiently mature that several good textbook and monographs on these subjects have appeared. Why add another? Three reasons. First, coalbed methane can no be can now differentiated into separate spesialties such as geology, geocemistry, geopisics, drilling and completions and engineering, and operations and pasilities engineering in addition to researvoir engineering. Secondly, the coalbed methane industry is increasingly global, allowing regional persfectives of previous work to be fused into a larger vision. Lastry, coalbed methane reservoir engineering has many spesialized methods in recent years. Antry into the fild could perhaps be eased by a book stressing the fundamentals aspecs of coal gas reservoir engineering.
