The layout of the book is sraightforward, so it can be used to suit one’s personal needs. We apologize to any readers wo think we have strayed from the path of simplicity in certain part, such as the associated variables and contagious distributions of chapter 3 and the order statistics of chapters 7. One might wish to amit these section on a first reading. The introduction to the chapters will be helpful for this purpose.
The book is written for use by students, practicing engineers, teachers, and researchers in civil and environmental engineering and applied statistics; female readers will find no hint of male chauvinism here. It is designed for a one-or two-semester course and is suitable for final-year undergraduate and first-year graduate students. The text is self-contained for study by engineerrs.
