Part 1 is a review of ancient and modern design methods from craft evolution and design-by-drawing to the logical, scientific an creative techniques that have been developed to assist designers and planners in recent years. The new methods are presented as an extension of the methods of the past and are shown to be essential to the planning and evolution of an increasingly complex world. The new methods are described to find a method that suits a particular design situations.
Part 2 is an outline, with examples, of thirty-five new methods. Each is presented in a simple format with a discussion of its advantages and limitations. The methods include logical procedures such as literature searching and the writing of questionnaires, innovative procedures such as brainstroming and synectics, taxonomic procedures such as morphology and system transformation and evaluative procedures such as specification writing andthe selection of criteria.
A review of new topics, embodying easy ways of using the book and a more intuitive approach to designing, was added in 1980.
Prefaces and imaginary preludes, which are intended to clarify and to extend the scope of the book, were added in 1992.
