Banana dwarf disease or commonly called as Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) is transmitted by banana aphid Pentalonia nigronervosa and widespread especially carried during the transportation of banana seeds. P. nigronervosa obtains its food by probing its stylet directly into the phloem and sucking fluid from the phloem. P. nigronervosa almost exclusively affects the Musaceae family, but can also be found in the families of Zingiberaceae, Araceae, and Heliconiaceae. Japanese taro is one of the plants of the Family Araceae. The purpose of this study was to find out the biology of P. nigronervosa aphids in Japanese taro and to find out the efficiency of BBTV transmission by P. nigronervosa when infective P. nigronervosa was passed on Japanese taro for several periods of time. This research was conducted in the Insectarium Laboratory and the experimental garden of the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Sriwijaya University, from July to December 2021. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with 4 treatments and 5 replications where each unit consists of 3 plants. Treatment 1 was infective P. nigronervosa without passing period on Japanese taro, treatment 2 was infective P. nigronervosa being passed on Japanese taro for 24 hours, treatment 3 was infective P. nigronervosa being passed period on Japanese taro for 48 hours, and treatment 4 was infective P. nigronervosa being passed period on Japanese taro for 72 hours. The results showed that P. nigronervosa could grow and develop on Japanese taro plants with fecundity of 30.7 per female. The results of a field study showed that Japanese taro could not reduce the efficiency of BBTV transmission by P. nigronervosa. Japanese taro plants can reduce the efficiency of BBTV transmission by Pentalonia nigronervosa if an infective vector skips life on Japanese taro for at least 48 hours.
