PENGGUNAAN KATALIS ASAM DUA TAHAP PADA REAKSI ESTERIFIKASI DALAM PEMBUATAN BIODIESEL DARI MINYAK BIJI KARET (Hevea Brasiliensis) DAN KARAKTERISASINYA
Research has been done about “The Use of Two-Step Acid Catalyst at Esterification Reaction in Biodiesel Made from Rubber Seed Oil (Hevea Brasiliensis) and The Characterization”. Decrease in free fatty acid content of rubber seed oil by esterification reaction carried out in two phases with a ratio the volume of rubber seed oil and methanol 5:1 for the first step and 5:5 for the second step during 150 minutes. Methyl ester produced from the reaction of transesterification by the oil from esterification reaction and methanol with a volume ratio 1:4 for two haours. Characterization is reformed to determine the quality of biodiesel based of ASTM (American Standar for Testing Material) method, the parameter test includes spesific gravity, flash point, cetane index, kinematics viscosity, carbon residue, sediment content, water content, sulfur content, distillation temperature at the 90% volume recovered who tested at the methyl esters and the mixtures with diesel on a volume of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% metyl esters. The result showed that the use of two-step acid catalyst is able to reduce free fatty acid content of rubber seed oil from 16.955 mgKOH/g oil to 0.662 mgKOH/g oil. Transesterification reaction had 88.33%v of methyl ester (biodiesel) and showed the characterization result is 847 kg/m3 for specific gravity, 35°C of flash point, 1 cSt of viscosity at 104°F, 1060 ppm of water content, 0.25% weight of carbon residue, 0.001% weight of sediment content, 0.065% weight of sulfur content and 87°C of temperature distillation at 90% volume recovered. The optimum conditions for mixing methyl ester and diesel oil is obtained on the volume of 2% methyl ester which has 844 kg/m3 of specific gravity, 59°C of flash point, 47 of cetane index, 2.4 cSt of viscosity at 104°F, 0.003% weight of sediment content, 0.01% weight of carbon residue, 139 ppm of water content, 0.073% weight of sulfur content and 332°C temperature distillation at 90% volume recovered. The gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis showed that methyl ester from rubber seed oil contained 4.73 % of methyl palmitate, 11.63% of methyl linoleate, 14.88% of methyl oleate, and 1.95% of methyl stearate.
