PENGARUH EKSTRAK DAUN BELUNTAS (Pluchea indica Less.) SEBAGAI ANTIBAKTERI TERHADAP Porphyromonas gingivalis
Introduction: Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the major etiologies in periodontal diseases. The treatments of periodontal disease are scaling and root planing with adjunct use of mouthwash in order to remove the bacteria causing the periodontal disease. A beluntas leaf (Pluchea indica Less.) has active ingredients such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins and phenols which have been shown to have antibacterial effects. The aim of the study: to determine the effect of beluntas leaves as antibacteria on P. gingivalis. Material and Methods: This in vitro study used 80% ethanol extract of beluntas leaves with the concentration of 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 70%. The positive control used 0,2% chlorhexidine gluconate and the negative control was 10% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The antibacterial test was conducted using disc diffusion method by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone using a vernier caliper in milimeter, then, the data were analyzed by conducting one way ANOVA and followed by post hoc Tukey test. The Result of the Study: All the concentrations of beluntas leaves extract showed antibacterial activity against P. gingivalis. The inhibition zone diameter of beluntas leaves extract at concentration of 70% was significantly higher compared to other concentrations. However, there was no significant difference between the extract of beluntas leaves group at concentration 70% and the positive control group. Conclusion: The beluntas leaves extract could inhibit the growth of P. gingivalis starting from the concentration of 30% and the highest inhibition zone was at the concentration of 70%. Keywords: antibacterial, beluntas leaves, inhibition zone, Porphyromonas gingivalis.
