Background: Parkinson's disease is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by four major motor symptoms, but the effects of this disease are not limited only to motor disorders. It is known that some non motor symptoms can precede motor symptoms and the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease by several years. The purpose of this study was to determine the profile of non motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease in several hospitals in Palembang.
Methods: This research was conducted in the Outpatient Department of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. In this cross-sectional observational study, thirty one patients with Parkinson's disease in Palembang were included as research subjects. All patients were interviewed by phone for approximately 20 minutes using the Non Motor Symptom Questionnaire (NMSQuest) screening tool.
Results: All patients experienced more than one non motor symptom. The most frequent non motor symptoms that patients complain about are sleep disturbances such as Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) (74.2%), followed by autonomic dysfunction such as orthostatic hypotension (71.0%), neuropsychiatric symptoms such as memory disturbances (67.7%), and sensory dysfunction such as musculoskeletal pain (67.7%). The majority of patients had prodromal symptoms (90.3%). The most common form of non motor prodromal symptoms found was autonomic dysfunction (38.7%).
Conclusion: Non motor symptoms and prodromal symptoms are common in research subjects. All subjects experienced more than one non motor symptom with the most common finding being sleep disturbances and prodromal symptoms such as autonomic dysfunction.
