AKTIVITAS ANTIBAKTERI EKSTRAK ETANOL JANTUNG PISANG KEPOK (Musa paradisiaca Linn.) TERHADAP Streptococcus mutans
Dental caries is the most common infectious disease in the oral cavity. Streptococcus mutans is a normal microflora in the oral cavity which can be a pathogen that causes dental caries. Kepok banana plant (Musa paradisiaca Linn.) is a plant that can be used for traditional medicine. The use of banana blossoms is still lacking and only processed as food currently, but it is known to contain active compounds that have antibacterial effects. This study aimed to determine the activity of the ethanol extract of M.paradisiaca Linn. blossoms on the growth of S. mutans. This research was a quasi-experimental study with a Posttest Only Control Group Design. The ethanol extract of M.paradisiaca Linn. blossoms was obtained from the maceration process using 96% ethanol. The antibacterial test was carried out in-vitro using the disc diffusion method against S. mutans bacteria. The concentrations of extract of M.paradisiaca Linn. blossoms consisted of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% with the positive control (chlorhexidine gluconate) and negative control (distilled water). The results showed that the 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of M.paradisiaca Linn. blossoms extract has an antibacterial activity with average inhibition zones respectively 2.63 mm, 3.75 mm, 4.78 mm, and 5.94 mm. Extract of M.paradisiaca Linn. blossoms 25%, 50%, 75% has a small antibacterial activity and 100% has a medium antibacterial activity against S.mutans. Keywords: antibacterial, Streptococcus mutans, Musa paradisiaca Linn.
