FABRIKASI TUBE KOMPOSIT EPOKSI BERPENGUAT SERAT KARBON
The total weight of a vehicle is considered as one of the factors that affect fuel consumpti on. From the calculation of the weight per part, the Steering System section using hallow iron material is considered not optimal and exceeds the target weight reduction. Therefore, improvements were made in the hope of reducing the total weight of the veh icle and getting the best results in fuel consumption, by manufacturing using composite materials in the form of carbonfiber tubes. In this study, carbon fiber tube fabrication was carried out with the hand lay with a length of 30 cm and differenup method t layers of each specimen and bending testing was carried out to determine technical strength. The selection of the hand layup method is considered efficient in terms of time and the risk of failure in fabrication. The first step that must be done is cutti ng the carbon to a predetermined size, then proceed by applying mirrorglaze to the molding made of PVC pipe, after that wrap the molding using plastic wrapping wrap to facilitate the release of carbon to the molding, followed by mixing resin and the cataly st and stir until evenly distributed, after stirring evenly, let stand for 5 minutes, wait for the trapped air when stirring was done earlier until all the trapped air is gone, then proceed with soldering by mixing resin with carbon that we have cut to siz e we flattened it using a special carbon roll, then waited for the resin to absorb into the carbon, if the resin has been absorbed, we continue with carbon polishing to the molding that we have applied with mirror glaze, make sure this molding is evenly di stributed, nothing is folded or attracted to the carbon fiber, then proceed again with plastic wrapping wrap again so that the printing is perfect, then dry as long as the sun is still shining, because this process does not use open but manually, the highe st bending test results with an average of 72,96318 MPa with specifications of 8 layers, an average thickness of 3.08 mm and the weight is 2.23 grams and the lowest result is obtained with an average of 37.95029 MPa with a specification of 4 layers, an ave rage thickness of 1.93 mm and a weight of 1.167 grams. For the 6 layers, the average result is 45.18573 MPa with a specification of an average thickness of 2.13 mm and a weight of 1.367 grams. Based on this, carbonfiber tube can be recommended as a replace ment for the old Steering System and can reduce the total weight of the vehicle.
